JAECOO J5 EV: Everything You Need to Know Before Launch
The dust has barely settled on the launch of the JAECOO J5 1.5-litre turbocharged premium SUV, but OMODA & JAECOO Malaysia are already gearing up to launch its EV sibling, the J5 EV.
Keeping in mind that EVs are all the rage on the roads in 2026, this launch is generating a lot of buzz coming from a brand that's been very successful in challenging expectations.
So what's in store for Malaysia's EV scene with the J5 EV? Here's everything you need to know about this new B-segment premium SUV EV.
Performance and Range Go the Distance
The J5 EV will ditch the 1.5-litre turbocharged engine in its ICE version for a front motor that outputs 155kW of power and 288 Nm of torque. This is significantly more powerful than its petrol sibling, perfect for city commutes in cut-and-thrust traffic and for confident over-taking on highways.
Powered by a 58.9kWh LFP battery offering an approximate range of over 461km (NEDC), this EV has a reassuring range that can take you from KL to Penang on a single charge. Goodbye range anxiety! That figure is helped along by clever aerodynamic engineering, including Active Grille Shutters (AGS) that close automatically at speed to reduce drag and squeeze more distance from every charge. For short-range daily drives, a potential once-a-week-only charge-up could be on the cards.
Impressive Fast Charging Capacity
Speaking of charging, if you do need juice on the go, the J5 EV supports up to an impressive 130kW DC fast-charging, well above most of its current rivals. This means you can go from 30 to 80% in approximately 28 minutes. For home charging, the SUV also supports AC 11kW and 7kW wallbox chargers.
Feature-Rich With Premium Interiors
Expect more of the same premium touches and top-notch build quality of the J5 ICE variant: large 2K infotainment displays, huge panoramic sunroof, wireless charging, level 2+ ADAS with a comprehensive list of safety features and more. There's even an in-car karaoke feature, turning traffic jams and roadside waits into impromptu singalong sessions.
The much-hyped pet-friendly interiors of the petrol-powered J5 will also be here, featuring claw-resistant, low VOC and easy-to-clean upholstery that's TÜV-certified, and air filtering systems for pesky pet-hair. The EV takes it further with a dedicated Pet Mode, which maintains cabin climate for optimum pet comfort while you step away and displays a message to let passersby know your furkid is safe and settled inside.
The EV also adds a vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability of up to 3.3kW output, perfect for powering appliances on camping trips or providing video entertainment for an evening outdoors. Pair that with Camping Mode, which keeps the cabin comfortable and power flowing during extended stops, and the J5 EV is happy to double as your basecamp for the night.
Contemporary Aesthetics
Exterior-wise, the EV has the same distinctive shape of its petrol sibling: boxy and muscular, with a style that screams off-road adventure ready without the overtly macho aesthetics. The EV is sleeker thanks to its minimalist bumper and rectangular headlights, with a clean, recognisably modern EV look with an upmarket vibe.
